    As we progress towards EARTH DAY this week, I am reminded of the beauty of the world we live in. I had the opportunity to take a 5 mile "hike" within my neighborhood by winding through the streets while avoiding my friendly neighbors directly due to COVID-19 parameters. During my walk, I had some fun with our ongoing Walking Alphabet Challenge activity and found the following attached pictures...for the letters S (Saturday's letter) and T (Sunday's letter)...This was a great way to enjoy the sunny weather and be a little more observant of the activity and beauty in my own neighborhood. I am also putting the pictures together into a "book" format with some alphabet-type "I Spy" verses that I might share later just for fun! Hoping everyone else is having a great day. 😎

    So - it's been a rather busy week even though we are all restricted in our movement outside of our homes. Working from home makes it challenging at times to maintain boundaries for work-life balance, but it also makes it a bit easier to meet the challenge of reducing a carbon footprint! No commuting on the interstates or driving excessively since mid-March has certainly helped reduce the CO2 emissions in many places across the country including our hometowns! Congratulations to Neil Leary on his inclusion in the upcoming issue of People magazine that is celebrating Earth Day this Friday, April 17Remember also to tune into the virtual teach-ins on April 21-22 at Dickinson (Information below courtesy of Dickinson Today Announcements):

    Educating Ourselves and Mobilizing for Action

    Join us online on April 21 and 22 for Dickinson’s Earth Day Teach-In. Students, faculty and Carlisle community members are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Earth Day and Dickinson reaching carbon neutrality by leading teach-in sessions to raise understanding and promote action for social justice, economic opportunity, and environmental sustainability. The sessions will explore challenges and opportunities for progress on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, as well as tangible actions we can all take to make the needed transformations. 

    Each session will be offered via Zoom unless otherwise noted. Use the links in the program schedule below to join the sessions that interest you. We ask that you join sessions 10 minutes before their start times.

    Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
    While water bottles are needed for health and safety in certain places, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. What are the barriers to you using reusable bottles and tap water instead of bottled water? How could you make this a permanent habit?

    Reusable water bottles are plentiful in most places - so there are not too many barriers under normal circumstances. In some cases, it could be a financial barrier or in others -  there actually may be no available tap water that is potable do to extenuating environmental issues. I have already made using a re-usable water bottle and tap water consumption a permanent habit when possible.

    As we go into the weekend of week 2 - working from home - it's good to think about work-life balance. One way to get some balance in your life is through exercise and activity! Dickinsonians - If you are not currently also participating in the annual Spring Into Fitness Challenge - this is a great opportunity to join in now! We are in the midst of a "Walking Alphabet Challenge" - all you have to do is take a walk and look for something to snap a photo of that begins with the letter of the day. Today's letter is D, since we are four days into this fun Challenge! (This challenge runs from March 31-April 25 - one letter each day to coincide with the alphabet, A-Z.) If you decide to do this specific Challenge with us, simply share your photos in Social Media by posting and tagging #SpringIntoFitnessChallenge2020 #EcoChallengeDsonSIFC2020 @DickinsonHR (Twitter) @DickinsonHRS (Facebook) @hrs_dickinsoncollege (Instagram)   So---go ahead and join us to boost your own and your families activity level while also boosting your EcoChallenge activity points too!

    Today was a beautiful spring day full of sunshine and fresh air. Although I am working indoors - I do take a few moments to appreciate the beauty that awaits me outside when I get a chance to take a break. Walking under the stars is the absolute best because it is so peaceful and serene...and you never know when a small herd of deer will pop out in front of you while you are walking...which makes the walk in the evening all the more interesting!

    The beauty of a sunrise or sunset is something that I have always enjoyed. When I was younger, the sunset over the pond at my parents house was one of the most serene scenes that I experienced. I actually painted a watercolor of this scene. The event of a sunrise and sunset resembles both a beginning and an end - but also offers the chance to think of the possibilities a new day offers or appreciate the things that have happened during the day.

    Walking in my neighborhood allows peace to enter my world. It is a way to escape the hustle and bustle of the automated process of cruising down the road in a car - and offers the ability to stop and smell the roses, marvel at the beauty and the appreciate the animal life (like deer) that run through the neighborhood where I live.

    Walking with a friend or colleague is a great way to inspire a healthy behavior in others while supporting your own physical and mental health and wellbeing. Getting a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise each day is best. It doesn't need to be a Marathon for you to reap the benefits - just a simple walk in the park or around the block is all that you need to bring a smile to your face and make your heart happy too!

    Eating more fruits and vegetables is a generally healthy habit, helping you to reduce your intake of bad fats and cholesterol laden meat products while increasing the nutritious vitamins and minerals that these fruits & veggies offer. Your body will thank you for this healthy action!

      I think eating more fruits and vegetables helps reduce blood pressure, risk of heart disease, prevent some types of cancer, and lower risk of eye and digestive problems. They are also lowest in environmental impacts, while other foods, such as red meat, can be especially harmful to both our health and the environment!
