Tend a Garden

I will tend to a garden each day, work on starting one, or find a local community garden to get involved with.

Practice Gratitude for Earth

I will spend 30 minute(s) each day outside, practicing gratitude (prayer, meditation, journaling, etc.) for Earth and the nature surrounding me.

Nature

Support Local Pollinators

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 60 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard or local community garden.

ONE-TIME ACTION

Energy

Line dry washed clothes

Weather permitting, I will dry at least half of my family's loads of washing (mostly washed in cold water) on a line in our back yard. (This isn't a one-time action, but it's not really daily either... kind of a weekly action!)

Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 30 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

    Nature Practice Gratitude for Earth
Kathleen Dean Moore says that a sense of gratitude leads to a sense of moral obligation. Do you agree? How do we cultivate a sense of gratitude as individuals, and as a society?

For me, slowing down, being mindful of the world and the creatures who share it with me helps me recognize things to be grateful for. Looking at the beautiful moon (a super moon!) of April 7th reminded me of the enduring power and mystery of this pale blue dot we live on.

I spent some time outdoors last night admiring the beautiful super moon. My dog Monty joined me and seemed to be impressed by its warm light too. A nice reminder that, despite the trials we're all going through with the pandemic, the world is a beautiful, powerful, and mysterious place.

One of the challenges I set myself is to save energy (carbon-intensive natural gas!) by line-drying clothes outside. Well, the weather's been mostly overcast and soggy lately. But for this small load of laundry I'll line-dry inside the house. Might take a little longer, but there's no big hurry. Patience, I'm told, is a virtue!

I'm missing being on campus and being able to spend time in the Gordon Natural Area. Here's a favorite photo from two years ago: A visit to the GNA with Kelsey Tennett and Nur Ritter. We'll get back there some day, hopefully soon. In the meantime, I'm getting some mindful moments by walking my dog Monty in the Wissahickon Park in Philadelphia.

Glad to get started on this EcoChallenge! I'll do my best to stick with these activities. I can already see that "everyday" life will make it hard. Even with the Stay at Home directives in place, the day is full of work and chores and being there for my family. New behaviors, or even ones I've done before but have pledged to be more mindful about, will take thoughtful effort. Glad to be doing it with a great group of WCU students, faculty, and staff.
