I joined this challenge in an effort to push me to become even more aware of my daily actions and how they impact my surroundings. It has been an eye opening and humbling experience.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Drive Less
How has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

    Tya Pope 4/26/2020 11:27 AM
I am incredibly fortunate to drive a hybrid. It has really taught me to be more aware of my impact and has challenged me to find even more ways to reduce my carbon footprint. As someone who did not always have a car, it was really important that I choose a car that would not only benefit me, but my community. I wanted to be able to help out friends with minimal impact. I have become such an  advocate in my circle for greener tech.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Simplicity Go for a Daily Walk
Fresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?

    Tya Pope's avatar
    Tya Pope 4/26/2020 11:23 AM
Getting out and enjoying some fresh air is so energizing. Really gets me motivated to be active that day and to take charge of my day. I wish I did this more. I have great places to walk, so it really is up to me to do it more often.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Happiness
How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

    Tya Pope's avatar
    Tya Pope 4/26/2020 11:21 AM
Daily gratitude has taught me to be grateful even when it feels hard to do. There is good in everything, it's just up to us to see it. Sometimes adversity makes us better and more vocal advocates. Sometimes it helps us to relate to people better. For me I am just so much more appreciative of all the blessings in my life.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

    Tya Pope 4/26/2020 11:19 AM
I'm terrible at making time to exercise, even in these muc slower times. I think planning to workout with a friend and keeping each other accountable would be a great way to keep me motivated. I would love to spend more time outside, so getting out for a walk or run to take pictures would be fun to do with my photographer friends.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Zero-Waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

I was really grateful to watch Bill S. make a bone broth using lots of left over pieces of vegetables. While I'm a vegetarian and wouldn't eat a bone broth, it made me think about all the ways I could better utilize left over pieces of vegetables.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Energy Turn it off
How is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?

    Tya Pope's avatar
    Tya Pope 4/26/2020 11:13 AM
It's a great question and not one I think of often. I wish more, if any of my power, came from more sustainable sources. I don't believe it does. If I were more conscientious about these types of things, it would provide a tremendous service to my community and environment.

This has been such a great experience. Thank you so much for getting us all together!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Work from Home
It takes the average worker in the United States 26 minutes to travel to work. One way to fix long commutes would be to make cities more affordable. An even simpler option: promote the use of telework. Are you in an industry that would allow you to work from home? What are some obstacles you might find yourself facing while working from home?

    Tya Pope's avatar
    Tya Pope 4/19/2020 5:32 PM
Now being forced to work from home, I find I am appreciative of the time to fully focus and finish tasks I start.  While I love being in the office and interacting with students, sometimes it can be hard to really "do my job."  I will talk to my supervisor once we are able to return to the office about being able to work from home once or twice a week going forward.  I commute an hour one way so to eliminate the toll it takes on me, my car, and the environment will be well worth it.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Simplicity De-Clutter My Home or Dorm Room
How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?

    Tya Pope's avatar
    Tya Pope 4/18/2020 7:07 PM
It would be a good idea to ask myself if I really need the new thing I am buying or if there is a way to use something I already have to fit the need.
