Angela Fernandez Barone 4/20/2020 6:48 AMAs this challenge nears its end, I'm thinking about all of the good that's come from my involvement each year. I made a commitment to 5-minute showers last year and haven't turned on my timer for awhile but did so this morning. Still under 5! Proud of the strides made, sparked by the challenge but ongoing! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Angela Fernandez Barone 4/20/2020 6:45 AMThe amount of waste my family produces has been one of the great eye-openers of this year's challenge. We're thinking much more about packaging and about things like paper towels that really add up in the garbage (we've changed to using dishrags). We've begun holding onto vegetable scraps to boil to make stock for soups. And we're much more conservative with what the groceries we purchase until we've used or have a plan for everything that's already in our kitchen. -
Angela Fernandez Barone 4/13/2020 6:15 AMCrazy busy time and I haven't been checking in as often as I should but meeting these goals is an ongoing daily commitment! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Practice Gratitude for EarthKathleen Dean Moore says that a sense of gratitude leads to a sense of moral obligation. Do you agree? How do we cultivate a sense of gratitude as individuals, and as a society?
Angela Fernandez Barone 4/05/2020 7:26 PMWalked the train from Fuller to Laurel Lake this weekend with my daughter and dog. So beautiful and calm. So grateful! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Plant an Herb GardenConsider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?
Angela Fernandez Barone 4/05/2020 7:25 PMGathered up all of my pots and prepped a set of them today. A little too early to plant but good preparations are being made! I've also teamed up with a neighbor who has a sunny spot for a garden plot. We'll help him weed regularly and share in his crops. -
Angela Fernandez Barone 4/01/2020 6:26 PMI look forward to the challenge each year! It's such a great time to become more mindful about daily habits and fuel some good ones! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Track my PurchasesWhat have you noticed about your purchases? Where are you inclined to make shifts, if any?
Angela Fernandez Barone 4/01/2020 6:25 PMToday I took a look back. Before this crisis, way too many fast-food purchases. The stay-at-home order brings those to a halt. No more Dunkin, coffee made at home. No more grab-and-go lunches, eating at home. It will be as much a health boost as a bank-account boost to keep this going when the crisis has passed!-
Angela Fernandez Barone 4/13/2020 6:20 AMAlso gravitating to more plant-based menus! -
Lindsey Lyons 4/02/2020 7:44 AMI am eating so much better without the ability to access bad food easily. Saving money for sure too. Great job, and way to find a positive in this challenge.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Angela Fernandez Barone 4/01/2020 6:23 PMToday's walk was with my two elder daughters--priceless time together, refreshing fresh air and got our blood pumping! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Angela Fernandez Barone 4/01/2020 5:59 AMI literally have bags lined up. It's shocking how much packaging is involved. I'll be more aware of purchasing with less packaging going forward. This also got me thinking about what is thrown away that could instead be put to another use. There were a few items like this in my audit. I'm working with my kids to raise their awareness of what they throw away that could be reused.-
Angela Fernandez Barone 4/13/2020 6:19 AMRevisited this weekend and began saving stumps of broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and celery to make vegetable broth for soups. Beeswax sheets instead of plastic wrap. Eliminated paper plates and plastic straws and water bottles long ago. But realized this weekend that reusable water bottles of all different shapes and sizes are the perfect way to distinguish one person's drink from another's--hgygienic too!
