  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Advocate for Greener Vehicles
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

I don't own a private vehicle and thankfully my uses are generally all accessible by foot, bike, or public transport.  Sometimes I get in a friend's car, but it is very infrequent.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Community Express My Support
What sustainability issues are most pressing or prominent on your campus? In your hometown? Where you live currently?

In the Northside of Carlisle, there are less street trees than in other neighborhoods.  I don't know if the residents want them, but they may decrease cooling costs and increase property values, so I would be interested in seeing what they feel about this.

Unstructured time has made it difficult to be focused on doing my work, but I also value the reduced pressure to always fill my time.  The pandemic has to some extent freed me from some pressures of capitalism.

I hear you!  And I remember related conversations from SPAN 410, back in the fall.  Seems that at this point certain cruceros are NOT going forward, and with so many stores closed, we're having to all be much more creative/innovative with what we have.  Like, after realizing that there's no elastic left to be purchased on the planet, realizing one can substitute a kiddo's outgrown headbands for the ear loops on fabric face masks.  OK, TMI.  Just having fun on the last day here!  And procrastinating on planning for some final sessions on Zoom.  ; )  Giuseppe, do share some of the ways you've skirted capitalist pressures!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Meet My Local Farmers
When you know who produces your food, you are connecting personally to your complex regional food system. What are the advantages of knowing who produces your food and where it comes from? Do you think this might enable someone to advocate for a better quality of life for those who produce their food, both near and far?

    Giuseppe Collia's avatar
    Giuseppe Collia 4/20/2020 6:26 PM
Knowing where your food comes from gives you a specific appreciation for the producer and the product.  Wasting food would feel like an insult to the producer and not paying them well would feel like you're telling them they aren't worth it.  Farmer's markets help us get to know our local farmers.  Maybe a platform for virtual farmer's markets could help us to connect to producers far away and convince ourselves to value them more.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Exercise Daily
How can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?

    Giuseppe Collia's avatar

I like to ride my bike really slowly so that I can look up more.  I love to look at trees, leaves, the wind blowing through them, and the life in them.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Improve a Bus Stop
How can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?

    Giuseppe Collia's avatar
    Giuseppe Collia 4/20/2020 6:22 PM
Using public transport is a great way to advocate for it!  Using it is increasing demand and it shows that it is important.  Also since public transport is so stigmatized, it is important to show people that anyone can use public transport, as long as efforts are made for it to be accessible of course.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Happiness
How does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?

    Giuseppe Collia's avatar
    Giuseppe Collia 4/20/2020 6:19 PM
Practicing gratitude can help remind you of the benefits of not being alone in the world and it can give you reason to work for a better world - if you appreciate someone, you probably want a better world for them.

Today I am especially thankful for the good weather, my friends Maic and Gabriel, and for my health.

How might spending more time outdoors enhance your brainpower?

    Giuseppe Collia's avatar
    Giuseppe Collia 4/17/2020 10:42 AM
Spending time outdoors can help clear your head.  I'm spending a lot of time inside these days so it is helpful to get outside so that I can focus when I am inside.

Happy Easter everyone!  During Lent, I go vegan as a challenge to myself.  Religion holds me to my commitments better than a New Year's resolution, so I think it is a useful time.  What keeps you committed?
