    Water 5-Minute Showers

I'm going to start washing my clothing on the cold water setting!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Work-Life Balance
How might practicing work-life balance lead to a more sustainable life for yourself? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?

I find that I keep my energy up by only working during specific hours.  I am more productive during the time I am working and I maintain motivation throughout the week.  Practicing balance in my personal life facilitates the integration of balance in my relationship with the natural world!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Less Screen Time
What did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?

I have lots of other hobbies that I enjoy spending time doing, so I don't find it difficult to spend time away from screens.  I tend to get stuck on Instagram so I try to pick certain times of day to check my feed.  Lately I've been knitting, doing puzzles, listening to music and painting with watercolors!  Check out this pair of knit shorts that I finished recently :)

These shorts are awesome! I’ve been meaning to get back into knitting as well because I also find myself getting stuck on social media. I think it’s a lot of fun to pick up on hobbies that you might’ve forgotten about for some years.

I just did a guided meditation from 10 Percent Happier's Coronavirus Sanity Guide.  "Boosting Low Energy", led by Matthew Hepburn is a great 10-minute practice if you're feeling a bit bored or lazy stuck in your house during social distancing!

To conserve water we've turned loading the dishwasher in my house to a Tetris competition of who can fit the most dishes in.  We are careful to get the most benefit every time we run the dishwasher!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Water Conserve Toilet Water
What would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?

While I'm new to the issue of water in Massachusetts, I've been reflecting on this question based on my observations of behaviors in my town.  I live in a small suburban town with lots of wetlands and protected natural areas, my house actually borders a wetland.  Through hot seasons I've noticed that households in the town continue to water their lawns several times a day, despite the heat.  I believe a shift to local or drought-resistant plants could help cut down on water use.  Additionally, the roads in the town are prone to flooding during rain events, there is a large amount of impermeable surface, the use of permeable materials could help cut down run-off.  I believe there is potential for rain gardens and green roofs to provide some water and aesthetic benefits as well.

I've decided to focus my action on water for this eco-challenge.  Check out this Flow Controller that helps me regulate how much water is coming out of my shower head.  Flow controllers are cheap, easy to install and compatible with most showerheads.  I reduce the flow of water when I'm not washing my hair to conserve water.

For those looking to practice meditation, especially during chaotic times check out the "Coronavirus Sanity Guide" from 10 Percent Happier.  This is a free resource with meditations and mindfulness practices from the big names in mindfulness.  Try a meditation and tell others about this awesome resource! Basic Relaxation by Sherl Salberg and Off your Game by Jonna Hardy are my favorites

I find it refreshing to get outside and go for a walk after my day of online work.  Getting outside helps to connect me to the natural world and it's super relaxing!  Today it was a bit foggy and rainy, the trees are looking beautiful :)
