REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicitySocial media can keep us connected with loved ones, make us laugh, and help us to learn new things. It can also take more time than we realize or intend to give. After doing this action for a few days, how do you feel? What do you notice?
Albert Jackson 3/24/2020 1:27 PMI generally try and limit my time on social when not directly communicating with others because sometimes seeing certain things on there may upset me or anger me, or maybe even make me feel left out in some cases. Limiting my time on this along with spending more time doing quality things has made me feel much better about my self. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureHow might spending more time outdoors enhance your brainpower?
Albert Jackson 3/24/2020 1:23 PMSpending time outside could help me learn knew areas and how to navigate them. It will allow me to analyse nature and notice new things like birds I haven't seen or other animals. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Albert Jackson 3/24/2020 1:21 PMUsually when I excersise I go for a run at the nearby park which is right by the lake. Running outside in nature makes me feel better than just running around my neighborhood because seeing nature usually improves my mood. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHow has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Albert Jackson 3/24/2020 1:12 PMThroughout my life I never had to really rely on driving places because I live in a town where most things are in walking or bike riding distance. I didn't get my license until my senior year in high school because I'd walk to and from school and carpool with others to cross country practice or other places. My attitude towards transportation today is based on that I would rather walk somewhere if possible because sometimes driving is unnecessary. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Albert Jackson 3/12/2020 10:34 AMWhen walking you can notice more things, you are moving slower than when your driving. When walking you can experience nature, smell the plants, admire the animals and trees. Walking will put you in a better mood, you will get physical activity and clear your mind at the same time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterFive minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?
Albert Jackson 3/12/2020 10:25 AMOne next step could be to wear my clothes more than once if they aren't dirty so that I will do less laundry. Another thing is I can limit my water use when at the sink, turning water off when brushing my teeth or lathering my hands with soap. I could also try using cold water more for showering and when at the sink. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reusable one, but it's just hard to make the switch. What stands in your way of making this a habit? By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Albert Jackson 3/12/2020 10:19 AMSome challenges that face this include, some places not allowing you to use reusable cups (restaurants, and dining halls). Another challenge is the single use cups are everywhere, whenever you go through a drive through or get a coffee they will give you a single use cup and often with a plastic straw. The best course of action for right now is to use my reusable mug whenever I can, limiting myself when ordering drinks from restaurants that have one use cups, and most importantly I can recycle the single use cups whenever possible. It makes me feel happy that I'm helping out with an issue that will hopefully inspire change. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?
Albert Jackson 3/12/2020 10:04 AMI won't really be saving any money from doing this as I live in a dorm, but the university will save money which they can use possibly for addressing environmental issues. When I'm back home and do laundry it will help my parents save money and I can hopefully inspire them to spend it addressing other environmental issues. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Albert Jackson 3/12/2020 10:01 AMElectricity in Erie is being generated from coal. Historically Pennsylvania has been a large player in the coal industry, which has had many environmental impacts. Coal mining itself causes ecosystem destruction such as mountain top removal and strip mining which opens up a large hole that destroys a certain area. Using the coal/burning it for electricity releases CO2 into the atmosphere which can pollute cities, cause medical issues in towns near the power plants, and contributes to global warming. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat are other ways you could use the power of the sun to reduce your own environmental footprint?
Albert Jackson 3/12/2020 9:45 AMThe most obvious thing that comes to me is using solar power, which is very expensive but will eventually have a pay off. Another thought is growing a garden in which you can eat your own food you grow. One last way is opening windows to allow light in during the day instead of turning on lights.
